Here's the cover of my friend Amalia Ortiz's book, which has my work Voz on the cover. Pictured is a self-portrait with a chicharra on my tongue. People ask me what it means all the time. I got the idea from Mexican folk remedy my father told me about. He told me if a young child wasn't talking, people used to say they should put a chicharra on his/her tongue. My idea in this work is pretty simple, it's about having a strong, powerful voice like cicada. Here's a link to buy this book and a video of Amalia performing her poetry. The original painting belongs to the author now, but I'll have some prints available on my bigcartel store soon.
